Blurb:
The magic and suspense of Graceling meet the political intrigue and unrest of Game of Thrones in this riveting fantasy debut.

Your greatest enemy isn't what you fight, but what you fear.

Elizabeth Grey is one of the king's best witch hunters, devoted to rooting out witchcraft and doling out justice. But when she's accused of being a witch herself, Elizabeth is arrested and sentenced to burn at the stake.

Salvation comes from a man she thought was her enemy. Nicholas Perevil, the most powerful and dangerous wizard in the kingdom, offers her a deal: he will save her from execution if she can break the deadly curse that's been laid upon him.

But Nicholas and his followers know nothing of Elizabeth's witch hunting past--if they find out, the stake will be the least of her worries. And as she's thrust into the magical world of witches, ghosts, pirates, and one all-too-handsome healer, Elizabeth is forced to redefine her ideas of right and wrong, of friends and enemies, and of love and hate.

Virginia Boecker weaves a riveting tale of magic, betrayal, and sacrifice in this unforgettable fantasy debut.

I didn’t know what to expect when I received my arc of The Witch Hunter, if the reviews on Goodreads were anything to go by then I was in for a treat.. and boy was I ever!

“witches, ghosts, pirates..” Yes pirates?! I’ve haven’t read many books with pirates in the only one that comes to mind is ‘The Assassin’s Curse’ but with the addition of ghosts and witches this book was waaaay better!

I was completely enthralled within the first few chapters as you are thrown into an alternate 16th Century England where magic is illegal and any affiliation with magic you are burned at the stake. Firstly the world building in this book is amazing with detailed descriptions of buildings and landscapes that make you feel like you’re really there along with the characters.

All of the characters in this book are great they completely won me over and are the main reason for my 4 star rating. The heroine Elizabeth is a Witch Hunter and is seriously kickass. She’s kind of a loner at the beginning of the book but she will do anything to protect those closest to her. She’s soon accused of witchcraft herself and must evade capture to stay alive, I had to admire Elizabeth’s will to live the girl just wouldn’t give up..

"I won't let them take me. I won't let them torture me. I will kill them or I will die trying."

Apart from her badass attitude she’s also hysterical, this book had me laughing out loud but she also has a sad past and a heartbreaking reason for being accused of witchcraft so you can’t help but love her.

This book has non-stop adventure as Elizabeth meets new friends (YAAAY GEORGE!) while trying to prove her innocence and take down a dangerously powerful wizard. The romance in this is a slow burn one with little angst that is beautifully told, to be honest I could have done with a little more romance because I adore them however the love interest in this book is so so so sweet, kind and an all round good guy so there was little-no room for my bad boy love antic’s.

I got a little confused during the last few chapters it took a little Inception twist were I literally didn’t know what was real or not. I recommend this to anyone who loves Fantasy as it’s perfect and also lovers of ‘The Mortal Instruments’ as the witches and wizards remind me of Magnus Bane who I’m still having withdrawals over. There is no real cliffhanger in this book so you can finish the book feeling satisfied and still be excited for what’s to come. Overall this book was a perfect read and I will be buying this upon release to add to my little collection and I’m looking forward to the series.
